Baisakhi – the Punjabi New Year is a harvest festival celebrated in Punjab with fun and gaiety. Generally it falls on 13th April but sometimes on 14th April every year. It also commemorates the foundation of ‘Khalsa Panth’ and the existence of the ‘Panj Piaras’ by their tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. Though it’s a festival of Punjab but people from all walks of life participate and witness this vibrant festival. People used to wear new dresses, take out a procession, perform folk dance – the ‘Bhangra’ and the ladies of the community perform ‘Gidda’. People pay homage to various Gurudwara across Punjab and distribute the exquisite ‘Kada Prasad’ or ‘Halwa’. The atmosphere is of full fun and frolic.
